Some statistical data about the condition of young people’s mental health is quite alarming. For example, one in every five adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18 has experienced a serious mental disorder. Also, suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people between the ages of 10 and 24.
These numbers have inspired D.A.R.E. to partner with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to launch More Than Sad, a 45-minute mental health enhancement material designed to be delivered by D.A.R.E. officers to high school students, especially the 9th and 10th graders.
More Than Sad teaches young people how to recognize the symptoms of depression in themselves and their peers. The material also challenges the stigma that surrounds depression and demystifies the treatment process for depression. More Than Sad aims to encourage the students to talk to a trusted adult about their concerns in mental health.
